If you have come across our Pen Servicing Accessories page and wondered what some of the tools are for, this guide will walk you through each one and explain how to use it.
Cleaning Tools
Bulb Syringe -- An easy, quick way to flush out your fountain pen using water or cleaning fluid. Remove the cartridge or converter, fill the bulb syringe with your chosen fluid, push it into the top of the pen, and slowly expel the fluid until the water runs clear.
Fountain Pen Cleaner -- Ideal for general maintenance or for shifting stubborn dried ink that is causing a clog. Use with a syringe, bulb syringe, or pipette to flush pen parts, or soak components in a small bowl overnight.
Pipette -- Like a syringe, a pipette can be used to fill an eyedropper pen, flush parts during cleaning, mix small amounts of ink, or transfer ink between containers.
Filling Tools
Ink Syringe -- Used to fill your fountain pen with ink, particularly useful for eyedropper pens. Fill the syringe with your chosen ink and fill the barrel or converter directly. You can also use it to refill empty cartridges for reuse -- a simple way to reduce plastic waste.
Blunt Needle for Converter -- Fits onto the end of an international standard converter, allowing you to fill without submerging the nib and feed. Also useful for extracting the very last drop of ink from a bottle.
Glass Bottle with Pipette Lid -- A small glass bottle with a screw-on pipette lid, ideal for storing or transferring small amounts of ink.
Ink Sample Vials -- Great for carrying small ink samples in a bag or briefcase. Also useful as small containers for spare nibs, feeds, or other pen parts.
Nib Tools
Brass Sheets -- Soft, thin brass sheets used to floss between the nib tines, releasing dried ink or fibres that may be restricting ink flow.
Smart Grip -- Used to gently grip the nib and feed unit to unscrew or pull it from the section, making it easier to clean the pen thoroughly or swap nibs.
Micro Mesh -- A very fine abrasive paper used to smooth a scratchy nib. First confirm the scratching is not caused by bent tines, then locate the scratch by drawing a figure of eight on paper. Once found, very lightly replicate the motion on the micro mesh, then check on paper again. Work in very small increments -- it is easy to remove too much material. Practise on an inexpensive nib before working on a prized one. Please note: altering your nib will invalidate any manufacturer's guarantee.
Maintenance
Silicone Grease -- Used to lubricate piston mechanisms and rubber O-rings. Apply with a toothpick or cotton bud to an O-ring, or use a cotton bud to apply carefully inside the barrel. A tiny amount is all that is needed -- less is more.
